How to add a blank page to an EPUB
Adding a blank page to an EPUB usually means unzipping the file, writing an XHTML page, editing the package file and zipping it back up correctly. EPUB Editor does all of that for you in the browser: select a page, press one key, save.
Step by step
- Open your EPUB in EPUB Editor. Click Add EPUBs or drop the file on the page. The book is stored only in your browser.
- Click Edit pages to see every page as a thumbnail.
- Select the page next to where the blank page should go.
- Press Blank before or Blank after (keyboard: B / A). The new page is highlighted so you can see where it landed. Made a mistake? ⌘Z / Ctrl Z undoes it.
- Save a copy and download it. The edited book appears in your library next to the original.
What the blank page looks like inside the EPUB
For fixed-layout books (manga, comics, picture books) the blank page gets the same size as the pages around it, so two-page spreads keep lining up, and the left/right page markers of every following page are recalculated. For regular, reflowable ebooks an empty section is added; reading apps usually show it as a blank screen or a page break.
The rest of the book is copied byte for byte: images, fonts and text are not re-compressed or altered, and links in the table of contents keep working.
When you need a blank page
- Two-page spreads are off by one. One blank page realigns every pair after it. See how to fix spreads in Apple Books.
- A chapter should start on the right-hand (or left-hand) page, like it does in the printed book.
- A double-page illustration should open on a spread instead of being split across a page turn.
Tip: the Tablet preview shows the selected pair exactly as a tablet in landscape would, so you can check the result before saving.
Common questions
Can I add more than one blank page?
Yes, as many as you like, anywhere in the book.
Can I remove pages too?
Yes. Select one or more pages and press Delete. Images used only by deleted pages are removed from the file as well, so it gets smaller.
Does it work on iPhone, iPad and Android?
Yes. On touch screens, tap to select a page and long-press to select more than one.
In short
How do I add a blank page to an EPUB?
Open the EPUB in EPUB Editor, choose Edit pages, select the neighbouring page and press Blank before or Blank after, then save a copy.
Will adding a blank page break my EPUB?
No. The editor writes a valid blank page, updates the package file and spread markers and copies everything else unchanged.
