How to fix two-page spreads in Apple Books

You open a manga volume in Apple Books on your iPad, turn it sideways, and the two-page art is split across the wrong pages: the left half of a picture sits next to an unrelated page. This guide explains why it happens and how to fix it in a couple of minutes, for free, without uploading your book anywhere.

Why spreads come out wrong

In landscape, Apple Books shows fixed-layout EPUBs (manga, comics, picture books) two pages at a time. The first page, usually the cover, is shown on its own, and after that pages are paired in a fixed rhythm: 2 with 3, 4 with 5, and so on. Each page in the EPUB is marked as a left or right page (page-spread-left / page-spread-right).

The trouble is that the pairing only works if the page count is right. If a volume was assembled from scanned chapters, it's common to have:

One page too many or too few shifts every pair after it. Everything from that point on is "off by one", and every two-page illustration is broken.

The fix: add or remove one page where the shift starts

  1. Open the book. Go to EPUB Editor, click Add EPUBs (or drop the file on the page) and open the book. Nothing is uploaded; it opens on your own device.
  2. Choose Edit pages. Pages are shown in the pairs Apple Books will display. The Tablet preview on the right shows the selected pair exactly as a tablet in landscape shows it, in right-to-left order for manga.
  3. Find the first broken pair. Step through the pairs with the arrow keys or the preview's arrows until a two-page illustration is split apart or a chapter's title page lands on the wrong side.
  4. Insert a blank page or delete the extra one. Select the page just before the broken pair and press B (Blank before) or A (Blank after). If the shift is caused by an unwanted page, such as a credits page, select it and press Delete instead. Every following pair moves back into place.
  5. Check, then save a copy. Look through the rest of the book in the preview. When it looks right, click Save copy. Your original stays untouched.
  6. Send it to your iPad. Download the copy and open it in Books: AirDrop it, use the Share menu, or add it to Books on a Mac and let iCloud sync it.

Tip: books often need more than one fix. After each chapter break, check that the chapter's first page lands where you expect, and that wide illustrations still meet in the middle.

Wide pages that Apple Books crops

Some volumes include landscape pages, like translator notes or a magazine cover. Apple Books expects every page of a fixed-layout book to have the same shape, and it crops pages that don't, so they look cut in half. EPUB Editor marks these pages with a FIT badge and, when you save, places them on a normal-sized page with black bars, so they're shown whole.

Common questions

Will this change the pictures themselves?

No. The page images are copied byte for byte. Only the page order, the blank pages you add and the left/right page markers change.

Does it work for left-to-right comics?

Yes. The editor reads the book's direction and pairs and previews pages left to right for Western comics and right to left for manga.

Does it work for other readers like Kobo or Kindle?

The fixed EPUB is a standard EPUB 3 file, so any reader that shows two-page spreads uses the same page markers. Apple Books is simply where the problem is most visible.

Is it free?

Yes. No account, no watermark and no limits.

In short

Why are my manga spreads off by one page in Apple Books?

Apple Books pairs pages in a fixed rhythm after the cover. One extra or missing page, such as a credits page or a split double page, shifts every pair after it.

How do I fix spreads in an EPUB?

Open the EPUB in EPUB Editor, use Edit pages and the tablet preview to find the first broken pair, then insert a blank page or delete the extra page there and save a copy.
